Chapter 14

Darius came off of Interstate 64 somewhere near Lexington, KY to get some gas; and Megan was sound asleep on the passenger’s side. They had been on the highway for roughly five hours, and daylight was moments away. Megan had a 1994 Honda Accord that was hell on gas—they hadn’t even driven 300 miles before the first fill up. Darius was leery of stopping anywhere for fear of being recognized on a Crime Stoppers billboard or FBI Most Wanted poster. It had gotten to the point that he was extremely paranoid whenever he was in public for a long period of time, and he had become reclusive because of it.

He once saw himself on a Crime Stoppers billboard shortly after fleeing Los Angeles; and his electronic image was plastered across a fifty-foot high sign right outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico while he was eating lunch at a local restaurant. A cold chill permeated his body once he saw himself on display, but luckily no one had recognized him. He immediately left the restaurant after paying the waitress and didn’t finish his food.

He pulled alongside pump seven and got out to pay the clerk inside the gas station. Megan had awakened from her sleep and got out herself to use the restroom. He bought a Mountain Dew and paid the clerk fifty dollars to fill up. There was nothing out of the ordinary during their brief pit stop until local law enforcement drove up. Megan had just bought some snack food after using the restroom and was on her way back to the car. The cop appeared to be running the license plate of Megan’s car, and Darius nervously continued to pump the gas while trying to remain calm. Megan was oblivious to the cop parked a few yards behind them and plopped into the front passenger’s seat. Darius never made direct eye contact with the cop and slowly drove off after he was finished. He couldn’t put the whole fifty dollars worth of gas in the tank and left without receiving his change back.

“That’s was a close call,” Darius said.

“What was a close call, baby?” Megan asked.

“I think that cop was running your plates back there.”

“Why? I’m clean.”

“I’m not exactly sure, but seeing you with me probably didn’t help much.”

“You don’t know that for sure…it is 2012….”

“And the world still hasn’t changed much.”

“You really need to let that go.”

“Or maybe he recognized my face from an FBI Most Wanted poster or something.”

Megan paused and then said, “Want me take over? I got enough sleep.”

“Nah, that’s okay… I got this Mountain Dew to keep me awake.”

“Okay.”

He continued to drive for about twenty miles before a speeding car rushed up behind them and rode his bumper briefly before turning on his red and blue flashing lights. He pulled over to the shoulder and parked, and then he pounded his fist on the dashboard in frustration.

“Fuck!” he shouted. “I knew that redneck motherfucker was gonna stop us.”

“Just relax, baby,” she said. “We didn’t do anything wrong.
